Tom Clancy

Writing for Tom Clancy’s video game adaptations is always a pleasure here at IndieGala. Last year both my colleague (The Italian Guy) and I did several posts around the Tom Clancy games. I focused more on the film aspect of the game and introduced a bunch of special ops movies to binge on. While he did fantastic reviews on some of the best Tom Clancy video games. Including Breakpoint and Rainbow Six Siege. You can check them all out here again, and you’re welcome about that.

Tom Clancy’s Works Are Always Fun?

Indeed, that applies to Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege and the latest game of the series. Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Breakpoint. But let’s take Breakpoint as an example here. Since it’s the eleventh installment in the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon franchise. And yes, the last published game from the series.

Much like its predecessor Wildlands, Breakpoint is a tactical shooter game set in an open world environment. And also set in an open world environment called Auroa. A fictional island chain in the Pacific Ocean. Furthermore, you play as Lieutenant Colonel Anthony “Nomad” Perryman in the game. A U.S. Special Operation Forces service member on a mission to the island to investigate a series of disturbances. They involve Skell Technology, a military contractor based on Auroa, and it’s worth trying. However, Rainbow Six Siege is a bit older game in the series. But equally fun nonetheless, and one of the most fun games in the Ubisoft catalog. Oh, and of course that you can purchase them here at IndieGala. Both of them and so much more from Tom Clancy’s series. Take your pick here.

But What About Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse?

Well, the 2021 movie is based on the book (of the same name) from Tom Clancy himself. Published in 1993, the book is in fact an origin story of John Terrence Kelly. A former Navy SEAL. And later a full-time operative for the Central Intelligence Agency under the name John Clark.  He’s probably the second most known character in Tom Clancy’s universe (after Jack Ryan). And prior to Michael B. Jordan, Clark has been portrayed on the big screen by Willem Dafoe and Liev Schreiber. By Dafoe in Clear and Present Danger (1994). And by Liev Schreiber in The Sum of All Fears (2002).

Will The Upcoming Tom Clancy Adaptation Be Good?

Well, it’s too early to tell, since it was delayed so many times. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic of course, and the release date is not even set. All we know at this point is that it will be released on Amazon Prime later this year. However, we do know part of the synopsis of Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (a small part) and the cast/crew of the movie. In regards to the premise, the movie will depict John Clark. S U.S. Navy SEAL, that goes on a path of vengeance to solve his wife’s murder. Only to find himself inside a larger conspiracy.

The star of Black Panther and Creed, Michael B. Jordan is in the lead role. That of Jack Clark. And along with him, there’s the presence of Jamie Bell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Luke Mitchell, Jack Kesy, and Lauren London. Among the rest of the cast.

Luke Mitchell as Rowdy

But as much as the casting of Without Remorse is fun (more on that later)… I’d like to mention the crew here as well. In my humble opinion, the crew is even more stellar than the cast. But let’s start with the man behind the camera. Stefano Sollima directed this movie. Sollima is a well-respected director that helmed Sicario: Day of the Soldado and the TV series Gomorrah. This will be his second movie in Hollywood, but time will tell if the movie will be any good.

Not to mention, this is an origin story. In the world of Tom Clancy, John Clark is an established, successful CIA operative. But Without Remorse takes us back to the early days of John Clark when he was just a Navy SEAL. Who knows? It could be good?

Tom Clancy Without Remorse: Killer Cinematography?

Although I respect Sollima behind the camera, the screenwriters and the cinematographers are incredible as well. First of all the Oscar winner Philippe Rousselot is in charge of the cinematography in Without Remorse. And secondly, Taylor Sheridan and Will Staples are in charge of the script. Of transferring the book to the silver screen, and yes I think they’ll do a good job at that. This is the second movie for Will Staples, but it’s the 7th in Tyler Sheridan’s career. He’s an experienced writer behind movies like Sicario, Hell Or High Water, Wind River. He’s also an Academy Award nominee and one of the most talented screenwriters working today. So, it’s safe to assume that the script is in good hands. Don’t you think?

A Long Road To Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse

It’s been a really long time in the making indeed. First of all, Tom Clancy sold the rights to his novel ‘Without Remorse’ to Savoy Pictures in 1993. And for a reported hefty sum of 2.5 million dollars. That’s right, soon after the novel was published in fact. But the movie has been in production from roughly that time as well. Almost 30 years in development, and according to some reports it’s still in development.

Yes, the production is still underway according to some sources (although IMDB says it’s completed). But Michael B. Jordan is not the first actor hired to play Jack. Back in 1994 Keanu Reeves got an offer of 7 million dollars to play the role but said no. Then a year later, the movie had Laurence Fishburne and Gary Sinise in the lead roles. Next (in 2012) there was Tom Hardy/Kevin Costner combo and finally, there’s the presence of Michael B. Jordan/Jamie Bell. All those actors and all those wasted opportunities.

However, if you feel that you’ve already seen Michael and Jamie together before… You are right about that hunch. The two of them were in 2015’s comic book adaptation of Fantastic Four. Michael was in the role of Johnny Storm, while Jamie was in the Ben Grimm / The Thing role. Yes, the movie was a big commercial and critical flop, but some good things came out of it. Like the real-life romance between Kate Mara and Jamie Bell. For instance. They’re both married now and welcomed a baby girl in 2019.
